Erosion of Trust — a one-minute video with Dr. Daniel BE
What does it mean for couples to experience an erosion of trust?
In a relationship, trust forms the bedrock upon which intimacy, security, and mutual respect are built. When couples experience an erosion of trust, it’s akin to a crack forming in a rock wall. Initially, it may seem insignificant, but if left unaddressed, it can lead to structural instability and eventual collapse.
The erosion of trust in a relationship often occurs in unexpected ways. Most of us are familiar with the deterioration that can occur from a big lie or betrayal. The effects are disturbing and obvious, like a flood. But, more commonly, trust is eroded slowly and over time. A small amount is lost, bit by bit, until a canyon is formed between partners.
As trust erodes, it corrodes the very channels of communication between partners. What was once open and honest dialogue becomes guarded and defensive, with each partner afraid of saying the wrong thing. This emotional distance, like a vast desert, makes it hard for them to reach out and connect, further exacerbating the erosion of trust.
Moreover, erosion of trust can also affect other aspects of the relationship, such as intimacy and commitment. When trust is compromised, it’s challenging for partners to fully open up to one another emotionally and physically. The fear of being hurt again can lead to walls being erected, preventing genuine connection and intimacy.
Couples Therapy at BEing There teaches partners the skills they need to create trust in thousands of little ways, instead of degrading it. We teach the emotional skills needed to change relationship dynamics and build intimacy, satisfaction, and togetherness.
Ultimately, rebuilding trust in a relationship is possible. Still, it requires dedication and willingness from both partners to confront the issues at hand and actively work toward healing and strengthening their bond.
